Recently I read an article on CNN about the case against the acclaimed website WikiLeaks. The article itself was about continuous attempts the U.S. gov't (in addition to other allied gov'ts) are making to shut WikiLeaks down. It gives some of the opinions of WikiLeaks supporters as well as those of some government officials. One particular response made by a quoted supporter stood out me. He said, "All the censoring of WikiLeaks is more alarming than the actual content of the leaks. It only further justifies WL's actions..."
I couldn't have said it better myself. The government's purpose is to establish order, but why does that have to mean they get to keep secrets from the nation they are promising to protect? Secrets that are of virtually no harm to the public? I understand that if not for under the table dealings, (like not reporting the accurate number of civilian deaths in this war on "Terrorism", or hiding Guantanamo Bay Procedures that restricted certain individuals from being accessed by the International Committee of the Red Cross, something the military has repeatedly denied) then the government would probably not get away with all that it does- which, to me, isn't such a bad thing. It really seems that the only individuals that are being harmed by this information are the very folks that are trying to snuff it out! But in any case, I'd have to say my most favorite part of this entire article was when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, said these beautiful words in reference to Julian Assange (the founder of WikiLeaks), "I think the man is a high-tech terrorist".
Ha, yes, Mr. McConnell, nothing gets past you! A man who is posting "secret" information on the internet regarding things like the war that our fathers, husbands, and wives are now fighting and even dying on behalf of clearly constitutes terrorism. From what I've gathered, WikiLeaks does nothing more than report the truth, a task that is seemingly impossible for our own democratically elected representatives. It releases information that shows that the real terrorists are a lot closer to home then we all realize.
Mr. McConnell, granted this man is clearly a thorn in your side (and not just yours but that of the entire United States Government) but, really, calling him a terrorist? I thought he needed a beard and turban to fit that description? Or is that a lie you guys conjured up too?
